Saving Energy in DC Schools Video Compilation

On May 7, the Alliance to Save Energy's, Saving Energy in DC Schools program came to a successful conclusion for the 2008-2009 school year with a reporting out / celebration by participating schools. This video is a compilation of the SEDS program components starting with the Teacher Training in October, 2008, followed by the Student Energy Audit Training, students project activities, the Mid-Year meeting, technology demonstration, and finishing with the Earth Day celebration at Horace Mann Elementary School. This year, fifteen public, private, and charter schools participated in the program across all grade levels. The Saving Energy in DC Schools Program had critical support from the District Department of the Environment, Washington Gas, and DCPS.

Green Design/Build at Philadelphia University

On June 14, 2008, graduate students from Rob Fleming's "Green Design Build" course participated in and had leadership responsibility for a design charrette at Awbury Arboretum. The charrette was to create a design scheme for a permanent wash station for Weaver's Way Coop Farm at Awbury. Rob is the Director of the Master of Science in Sustainable Design Program at Philadelphia University and the lead teacher/creator of the Design/Build course. The charrette was the "design" part of a process that continued in early August, as the students were then tasked to "build" the wash station from recycled building materials, whose design was based on concepts developed at the charrette. The process was one of the most powerful examples of the hands on project based Service Learning methodology we here at Guerilla Educators have been involved with, to date. For the students, none of whom had participated in either a charrette or in a construction project of such magnitude, the program was transformative. This video shows the full sweep of the design/build process, from concept through to completion of the physical facility. Wow!

Student Boat Building, the Wooden Boat Factory

In this video, 6th and 7th graders worked with world class Community Partner, The Wooden Boat Factory. They started with 4 rectangular pieces of boat wood and, working 2 hours/week, finished 8 months later with the boats on the water. Powerful!

Solar Projects in 3rd Grade

This video depicts 3rd and 4th graders conducting alternative energy projects focused on solar applications. It is a compilation of 2 projects designed by Guerilla Educatorsin which students designed and built solar powered model cars and solar powered battery rechargers. The video authentically demonstrates the power of Project Based Learning to engage students and give them ownership in their educational processes. It also shows that learning can (and should) be FUN!

Scott was named the AIA's Philadelphia 2007 Young Architect of the Year. This video has been featured on the iGreenBuild website. Sustainable "Green" Architecture Project in 4th Grade

This video depicts an inner city 4th grade class in Philadelphia that participated in an American Institute of Architects Architecture in Education program with critical support from John Sole Founder of Guerilla Educators. It is a powerful synopsis of this 12 week project in which students working in small cooperative groups envisioned, then built models of their lunchroom as a state of the art, high performance, sustainably designed eating area. Architects from SchraderGroup came into the classroom once a week for 12 weeks to work with the students. The design schemes had to contain at least 4 sustainable elements. It is our firm belief that Project Based Service Learning (PBSL) is the most effective pedagogy to effectively educate ALL students regardless of demographic and that connecting school design directly to students, teachers, and curriculum is the gold standard of the PBSL methodology. To begin the process of elemental change in the culture of how we use and conserve our finite natural resources it is necessary to begin with our youngest citizens.
